The Visionaries of Kansas City Park System
The story of Kansas City’s fountains begins with two visionaries: George Kessler, the city’s first landscape architect, and August Meyer, a pioneering parks commissioner. Inspired by the City Beautiful Movement, they set out to make Kansas City a metropolis with “more boulevards than Paris and more fountains than Rome.” Today, their dream is alive and well as you’ll find fountains of every size, style, and era across the city.
One of my personal favorites is the Mill Creek Fountain (formerly the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain) at the Country Club Plaza. With its majestic horse sculptures symbolizing the great rivers of the world, it’s a true masterpiece and a must-see. Another gem is the Meyer Circle Seahorse Fountain, an elegant fountain featuring graceful seahorse sculptures that captivate visitors year-round.
