Behind the Scenes: How Kansas City’s Fountain Sculptures Are Preserved

Yesterday on a tour with Kansas City Fountain Tours, we came across something you don’t see every day — and honestly, something most people don’t even realize is happening behind the scenes.

One of Kansas City’s fountain sculptures was being carefully maintained by a conservation team.

No signs. No announcements. Just quiet, detailed work happening right in the middle of the city.

A Rare Glimpse Into Fountain Care

At first, it looked like the bronze sculpture had a subtle sheen — like it had already been treated with something.

Then came the part that caught everyone’s attention.

A specialist slowly moved a heating tool across the surface.

Naturally, the questions started:

  • What are they doing?
  • Is something broken?
  • Is that… wax?

Short answer? Yes.

And what we were seeing was something pretty important.

Why Bronze Fountain Sculptures Need Protection

Kansas City’s fountains are more than beautiful — many are historic bronze works of art.

But unlike most sculptures, these live in a tough environment. They’re constantly exposed to:

  • water
  • mineral buildup
  • changing temperatures
  • weather and pollution

Over time, all of that can wear down the surface and damage the natural patina.

To protect them, conservators apply a thin layer of protective wax every few years.

Think of it like a shield — helping preserve both the look and longevity of the sculpture.

What We Were Actually Seeing

Here’s the part we got lucky enough to witness.

After the wax is applied, it doesn’t just sit on the surface.

Heat is used to:

  • help the wax spread evenly
  • bond it to the bronze
  • create a stronger, longer-lasting seal

So what looked like a simple pass with a heating tool…

…was actually a critical step in preserving the sculpture for years to come.

The Experts Behind the Work

The work is done by trained art conservators — specialists who focus on preserving historic objects and public art.

The team we learned about includes professionals from Taggart Objects Conservation, who periodically travel to Kansas City to care for these sculptures.

There are also local experts involved in preservation efforts, including those connected to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and community programs like Adopt a Monument, helping educate others on proper sculpture care.

Why This Matters

It’s easy to admire Kansas City’s fountains for their beauty.

But moments like this remind us:

They don’t stay that way by accident.

There’s real craftsmanship behind the scenes — people with years of experience working carefully to protect these pieces so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.

One of Those “Right Place, Right Time” Moments

We always say no two tours are exactly the same.

And this was one of those moments you simply can’t plan.

A quiet reminder that there’s always more happening beneath the surface — even in places you think you already know.
